The College of the Arts is comprised of the School of Music, School of Communication and Media, Department of Art and Design as well as the Department of Theatre and Dance. The College provides a wide range of creative fields in high-tech and professional facilities. The College of the Arts offers a Bachelor of Arts in Communication which provides an understanding of how communication is critical to every organization and brand. It is 120-credit hour and is only available on campus. Some of the courses required include Writing for the Media, Colloquium Series, Public Relations Writing, Argumentation and Debate as well as Career Management and Rhetorical Criticism.

The College of Education and Human Services offers nationally recognized programs for those who wish to enter teaching, exercise science, public health, nutrition, human development and more. The Master of Arts in Educational Leadership is available both on-campus online or students may choose a hybrid version. The program provides the skills necessary to move into leadership roles in higher education, including student affairs, academic affairs or college and university administration. The degree is also available with a FastTrack option that allows students to earn the degree along with both the Principal and Supervisor certifications. Courses that may be required include School Finance, Education Law, Differentiated Supervision, School and Community Relations as well as Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment.

The Bachelor of Science in Earth and Environmental Science offered through the College of Science and Mathematics prepares students for careers designed to protect the Earth and environment. The program requires 120-credit hours and is only available on campus. Students gain an understanding of the history of the Earth system as well as structural geology, igneous metamorphic petrology, stratigraphy and chemistry. Courses that may be required for the program include Geomorphology, Aerial Photograph Interpretation, Map Reading and Cartography as well as Hydrology.

Through the Graduate School, students are able to complete a Digital Marketing Post-Baccalaureate Certificate that focuses on creating effective digital marketing campaigns. The program focuses on current research in digital technology, analytics and business cases. They also gain practical experience by using real-world digital marketing issues to create mobile, social and web strategy for organizations. Courses required may include Social and Mobile Media Fundamentals and Analytics, Digital Customer Experience Management, Omni-Channel Retailing as well as Digital Marketing Strategy and RODMI.

About Montclair State University

Plans for a Normal School in New Jersey began in 1903 but it took another year for the state legislature to approve funding for the new school. In 1908, the New Jersey State Normal School opened its doors with the goal to educate those who wished to teach. The school stood on a 25-acre campus and the first graduating class in 1910 had only 45 students.

In 1927, a study found that only 10 percent of high school teachers in the state received their degree in New Jersey, the school became Montclair State Teachers College and developed a four-year program in pedagogy, the first in the country to do so. During World War II, several students, with the permission of the school president, joined the US Navy as volunteers in order to train for the war. Many also sold war bonds to support the war effort.

In 1958, the Panzer College of Physical Education and Hygiene merged with the normal school to become Montclair State College. In 1994, it became Montclair State University.

Today, there are more than 21,000 students attending Montclair State University. In 2017, New Jersey recognized Montclair as a public research university. In 2019, the Carnegie Foundation recognized the school as a doctoral university.

Montclair State University Application Requirements

Undergraduate applicants must provide official high school transcripts, letters of recommendation and an essay. Transfer undergraduate applicants must have a sustained academic curriculum with a “B” average and must demonstrate academic success in all courses already completed. They must also be in good standing at the last college or university attended. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities must be provided.

In order to apply for the Digital Marketing Certificate, applicants must provide an official transcript documenting either an undergraduate degree or a Masters in Business Administration from an accredited college or university. They must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. An essay and resume are also required.

Other graduate school applicants must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. They must also provide letters of recommendation along with GRE or GMAT scores. An essay is also required.

Montclair State University Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate tuition for New Jersey residents is $435.77 per credit hour and $701.10 for non-residents. Graduate tuition for New Jersey residents is $730.28 per credit hour and $1,054.19 for non-residents. Tuition for the Educational Leadership degree is $1,870 per course if taken online.

Students and families have many options to help finance their education at Montclair State University. Students may qualify for grants or scholarships which are gift aid and do not need to be repaid. Students attending on campus may qualify for work-study programs which provide employment to offset the cost of tuition. All students are eligible to apply for student loans but it is important to remember that loans must be repaid after graduation.

All students, regardless of income, should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The form must be completed to qualify for financial assistance and it must be renewed annually. Some assistance is offered based on need while there may be financial aid that is based on merit.
